Eli, We have a 1989 900 16 valve also, however, the connector is under the rear seat. To best do this test, make yourself a switch lead, with long enough wires so that you can comfortably sit in the drivers seat to work it. To make a switch lead, simply take any on/off switch (I used a std, electrical wall switch, 49 cents), and hook up 5 - 6 feet of wire to each side. It would help it you could crimp a female spade lug on one end, to plug on pin 3 and an alligator clip on the other end, to clip to any ground. I take that your Hayes manual was only wrong about the location of the connector and has the procedure for reading the code correct. If you have a problem, let me know and I will copy the steps given in my Bentley manual. Good luck.
