Subject: Dealer nightmare

Decided to purchase a used Saab and thought I found the right car at the San Diego Saab dealership. 92 Convertible (turbo/std) that looked very nice except for dull paint (due to the harsh CA sun I expect). Sticker price was $11K and salesman said they just dropped the price to rock bottom to move the car out - no room for dealing. First thought was "oh well" but after looking at a few more cars (and not enjoying shopping) I decided to eat crow and purchase the car. This was a weekend and on Monday morning I called the sales guy to say I wanted the car. His response was "manager upped the price $500" - that was the weekend special. I should have known better but asked to speak to the manager - not available but would call me back. Didn't get the call until Tues morning. While not happy (and told him so) I said we had a deal and could he please fax a PO to my bank (on-site at my employer) so they could cut a check for the car since I really didn't want to make multiple trips to the dealer. Also informed manager that I would be in meetings all day. Manager said ok. PO was faxed that day. I know because I called the bank at the end of the day to make sure everything was ok. Bank (actually a credit union) said it came but was not signed by the dealer. They had left a message for the manager requesting a signed PO but he had not called back. Got a check from the bank first thing next morning (Wed), called salesman and left message that I had the check and I would be there around 5pm, could he please make sure the car was ready to go. He called back to say the car was already sold and did I "want him to try and find me another!!!!" Finally got the manager again and asked why he had welched on the deal. His response was, "I didn't have any money from you." When I told him we had a deal and had put him in touch with my bank he said, "I should be getting in a similar car soon". My response was we would not be doing business. Am I being naive in thinking we had a verbal deal? Does this strike anyone else as sleazy on the dealers part? John
