If you are mechanically inclined at all, both are easy jobs. It's probably best to get a service manual, which should have photos showing the location of the parts, and tips on replacement. If you do the thermostat, make sure you use a genuine Saab part, and replace the gasket, too. More expensive, but worth it! You also might be able to narrow down the problem a little. When does the overheating occur - highway driving, city (stop-and-go), or both? Does turning the A/C on and off affect it? For a quick check of the cooling fan system, start the car, shut off the A/C (press 'econ' button on climate control), and let it run until it's hot. Before the gauge gets more than about 80% of the way to the red, you should hear the fan running (up front near the radiator).
