Subject: Need help with speed transducer

I`m in the process of replacing the electronic speedometer transducer on my 1989 9000t. I removed the false bulkhead, unplugged the old transducer and plugged in the pigtail from the new transducer. I then went under the car and removed the transducer itself. When I did, I noticed that the small shaft coming out of the old transducer was shorter than the new replacement ( piece broken off? ) . Of course when I tried to install the new transducer it would not go in far enough to catch the threads to install it. Is there a way to get this piece out? I have heard that there is a plastic gear that the transducer shaft goes into. How do you get this gear out. I can see a bolt just below and to the right of the transducer that I was told was for removing the gear in the gearbox that some how goes to the transducer. Is there a metal gear and a plastic gear that connects to the transducer? As you can tell, I am in the dark here and need some help from someone that has been through this or is familiar with this setup. Thanks in advance. I`ve had this car six months and havn`t been able to use the speedo or the trip computer yet. Regards, Jerry C
