His technique was to use a flat bladed screwdriver (a chisel would be fine) and a hammer, and to tap the screwdriver at an angle on the side of the bolt, so that the blade "caught" or "bit" into the bolt head and then turned it. Just a few "tap, tap, taps" and it was loose.
