Subject: Re: Inner cv joint keeps breaking.

Alan, I had an '81 with a similar problem, and never really did figure it out. However, here are a few things to try: First, open up the opposite inner CV, and observe its position. If it seems really far in, this would point to a motor/transmission positioning problem. In this case, I'd look over the motor mounts really carefully, they can be bent a bit and it's not real obvious. Another possibility here would be that the car had been crashed and the "frame" is somewhat bent. If the opposite CV is positioned correctly, then the problem must exist only on the affected side. One possibility here is improperly positioned or bent control arms. Also, it's remotely possible that one of the circlips holding the wheel bearing has popped out, and the bearing has slid toward the outside of the car. See if the outer CV joint housing seems closer to the steering knuckle than the one on the other side of the car. I also seem to remember that at some point Saab introduced slightly longer driveshafts to help this type of problem. Might be worth a call to a dealer to check it out. Hope this helps!
