I had a kind of simular problem with my GLi. I'll try do describe what my mechanic did. There is this big rubber hose going next to the engine and connecting to a steel cone in which there is a plate (pff, I can hardly understand it myself). This plate is 'controlling' your gas flow. If it is too dirty it can remain to far down (as if you would pull your choke while driving). At that time your engine is getting too much -fuel and is 'drowning'. Therefore it stalls. After looking at a lot of things, simply cleaning this plate helped. You never know. Johan 83 900 GLi (parting out of this car) 88 900 i 94 9000 CS 94 9000 CSE
