Subject: Re: Advice for 88' 900T performace upgrade

Hi daddyope, A quick list of pointers/ideas for improvement. 1) Exhaust. The easiest thing to do is to cut out the centre box (The long round one which sits under the middle of the car) and replace it with it straight pipe. The pipe will cost you like 10 bucks and is an easy job. I don't know what the emissions regs are like where you live but my car has no cat and only the rear box for muffling. This greatly improves midrange pick up and helps get rid of the astmatic nature of the engine at higher revs. 2) Spark plugs leads. Use NGK BCP7EV with standard leads i.e. Bourgicords or possibly magnicors. DONT waste money trying to upgrade the ignition system you will get no improvement whatsoever. 3) Air intake ducts. Again do not bother waste of time and money. 4) K&N filter. Worth a few horses and no more I haven't bothered. 5) APC mods. Red boxes are in my opinion a waste of time. My friend has the twin pipe rear pipe and red box on his 88 S aero (similar to SPG in the US). My own car 84 900T16 eats his easilly and only has tweaked standard APC box the exhaust mods above and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator(well worth the money). I have also done some body mods described later. Some general advice. You have 2(okay 3) ways to proceed. 1) Persevere with the APC system and try and get maybe 20 more horses whilst keeping the piece of mind that the engine shouldn't get damaged. OR 2) Ditch using the APC and set your boost using the turbo wastegate. If you want big power you will have to seriously consider this route. 3) The third way! Uses the APC system purely to let of boost when engine knock is detected, boost otherwise let out using wastegate. I havent verified that this works satisfactorilly yet but in theory it should! I will post the details to this NG when done/tested. BTW I also get a funny let off some boost(lets it off then back on again within say 1/2 second) sometimes which is definetely caused by the APC system. Everything else has been well checked get yours checked over too! If you go the route of setting the boost level from the wastegate it is well worthing getting it replaced with a proper grp A metal one the standard one flaps about like nobodys business. The intercooler from later cars is supposedly better. You can fit a 9000 intercoller in front of the radiator but I have abandoned this approach for the time being as it involves cutting out metal off the front of the car. What I have done is ditch the headlight wipers. If you look down infront of the intercoller you will see a largish black box which is the headlight wiper motor. I don't need the things so I took them off to get better air flow into the intercooler. I also cut out some of the front air-dam (84 cars have squarish bumpers and forward sloping air dam different to later cars), and the 7x1 inch piece of plastic that covers the gap between the bottom of the headlight and the top of the bumper. Looking directly in at the intercooler from the front of the car I can now see a 4x4 inch section at the bottom of the cooler and a 7x1 inch section in the top half. Looking through the front of the air dam nearly all of the intercooler is exposed and free of clutter like wires etc. which I have moved about and tapped up. If you are serious about power mods some other things to consider are replacing the cylinder head with one from a 2.3 litre 9000 and fitting a bigger turbo like a t3/4 hybrid or if they are available yet a VNT(Variable Nozzle Turbo). Also you have water injection and/or replace the intercooler with a water cooled one from Abbott racing. Yours, Neil.
