Subject: Re: Thinking ahead: good snow tires for Viggen?

My extensive online research (using fastsearch.com) into the snow tire selections out there reveals that you ought seriously to take the Swedish Gislaveds into consideration for Boston winter footwear. The marque takes its names from a couple of brothers who entered the winter footwear business in the late 1800s. There is a town named after them. Be forewarned; these Gislaved tires are hard to research. Much of what is written is in a Scandinavian language. From what I gather, Gislaved is a low-volume, high-quality producer. The only knock on them is that if you stud, they may lose their studs. From my personal experience, I heartily endorse the Finnish Hakkepellitta Nokias (named after a war hero from Finand's 30 years' war with the Russians) which gave me years of wide smiles in the most Godawful ice and (esp) snow conditions imaginable in the wintery west of Calgary, Canada: the Gumshoe-iest tires I have ever had the pleasure and safety of using. And longwearing too. In a recent Finnish magazine special on snow tires, Gislaved squeaked out Nokia for top spot. Our Canadian dealerships are running a special on Gislaveds; four on plain-Jane steel rims with hubcaps; mounted and balanced for $1091.00. You ought to get something going by way of rims to get those ground effects clear of the snow and ice, 'else you scrape 'em all to hell, yes? And you can forget about appearances. In fact, you may just smile while driving as the fancy-dans frown at your plain- Jane steel rims. Form follows function. When's the last time you wanted people to admire your galoshes for their stylish appearance? Take a look at the rims the ice racers use. Blizzaks are highly rated and said to be wear-improved. In previous years, one season rendered them a M+S tire rather than a winter tire. Too much wear. One thing about the Scandinavian snow tires: few will be able to properly pronounce their names at first glance; part of the charm. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!
