Subject: Re: Bypass turbo?

You know, in the old days (8-valve, pre '85) this used to be done. Not real often, but it was done. I don't know if a specific aftermarket product was available, but the basic problem is to bypass the exhaust and the input airstream. A muffler shop might be able to make a custom exhaust bypass, and the air inlet bypass could probably be done with the correct diameter rubber hose. I don't know about the "H" (16-valve) engine, if there are significant mechanical differences between the turbo & normally aspirated versions. There weren't any in the 8-valve engine. The biggest problem is apt to be the on-board computer. Even in '87, the engine was run by the computer, so ripping out the turbo might leave the computer confused to say the least. If it's just the turbo itself, you might be better off looking around for a used turbo. However, the turbos have always been the weak link, so to speak, in the engine. Add to that the fact that the typical turbo purchaser is (how to put this diplomatically) an "energetic" driver means that the turbo gets well exercised, so I wouldn't expect a used turbo to be particularly reliable. This was especially the case in the early turbo years (78-80). They've gotten better over the years, but still...
