My turbo does the same (1990 140K), especially the next time it's started after a motorway run. I posted a similar question here and responses I got seemed to suggest that this was normal - caused by warm oil flowing down after the engine is switched off, starving the top end of oil until the engine has turned over a few times. Is this what they invented magnatec for? Anyways, the verdict was not to worry unless the noise persists. Mine stops after about 5-10 seconds and then purrs nicely - from the cabin, my speedo cable makes more noise than the engine! surfsofa On Mon, 20 Sep 1999 23:14:10 +0100, "paulnopsamternet" <p.whiternopsamternet.nospam.com> wrote: >Hello >I just recently bought a 1990 4door 900i 16v with 160,000 miles on the >clock, overall I am realy pleased with the car, the only thing that slightly >concerns me is that on starting the engine from cold there is a sort of >whirring/tapping noise that sounds as if it is coming from the timing chain, >(the engine sounds realy sweet when up to operating temp.) is this normal? If >not any ideas on what I should check. >all ideas/suggestions much appreciated > >Paul Whiter > > >
