Several things: 1) Does the low fuel warning light come on - is it working? - if not the guage may not be going through it's full travel. 2) Check that the guage earth, usually to the back of the car is clean and making contact. 3) Has the tank been damaged or is pushed in - this could cause the guage not to travel it's full length 4) Has the guage been taken out at any time? If so it my not of been put back in the correct possition and is hitting the pickup/pump body in the tank before reaching the end of it's travel. 5) You will have to up lift the boot floor to check this. 6) Check the connections/earthing in the dash panel (pain!) 7) If you take the guage out of the tank check that it travels its full length and is not binding at any point, shows no evidence of being bent etc. 8) If you take the sender out of the tank look in the bottom with a torch, no naked flames!!!! and check that there not dirt and rubbish in the bottom. 9) Changing the tank can be done and is relatively easy, soak all the bolts and straps etc in wd40 or equivalent the night before starting. Finally have you changed the filter recently? Good Luck Malc Scotland Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
