I did change to synthetic oil as soon as I bought the > car which may of helped.... > > Check out www.townsendimports.com etc for techno-documents etc, seems > quite good - dominic99 put me on to that one if you haven't seen it > > Regards > Malcolm > Hi Just to let you know, I have exactly the same symptoms on my 1990 900i, lasty weekend I removed the tensioner to measure the pushrod extension, it should be a max. of 11mm, I found mine to be 14.5mm, so like you I will be spending this weekend replacing the timing chain, I have done exactly the same procedure on a motorcycle in the past, it is quite possible to do this without any *special* tools, as long as you have an assistant and are very careful you can join the new chain by peening the ends of the soft link with a hammer, I plan to split the old chain using a grinding attachment on a drill and a punch to remove a link, of course a good alternative to this is to buy a chain splitter!! The total cost for chain+new timing cover gasket+tensioner seal is £45, from Eurocarparts. Good luck with it! To change the subject, in your other posts regarding headlight switch, I am interested to know exactly which switch you are talking about, do you mean the large round Main headlight switch will pull out? as I need to replace the bulb in this myself and don't realy feel much like taking the dash out!!
