More than anything, it's probably because the Saab is a safe car. Being designed to preserve your life at all costs, the Saab will incur body damage more quickly than many other cars -- because Saab's philosophy is that it's better to wreck a fender than wreck your leg. So, in moderate-speed accidents, the Saab will incur more repair expenses (and fewer medical expenses). It's also likely that your insurance company has a knee-jerk response to "turbo." Many insurance companies do, especially if you have any speeding offenses on your driving record. They don't care about the type or rating of the turbo -- for example, the fact that the 9-5 SE V6's turbo is low-pressure and adds more torque than speed does not matter to most insurance companies. As others have mentioned, Saabs are very safe from theft: their mechanical design makes them difficult to steal, they come with alarms, and there is no market for "hot" parts. I would call around for different insurance rates. Most insurance companies will give you a discount if you have more than one car with them, and if you have homeowner's or renter's insurance with them as well. Also, make sure they're aware that the Saab has front and side airbags, passive and active anti-theft alarms, daytime running lights, and anti-lock brakes. You may save a little more on insurance by having a Lojack tracking device installed, or by having your windows "etched" with an anti-theft code by the dealer. (With my insurance company, the discounts for these things is more than cumulative: if you have several of these features, the discount is deeper than it would be for the sum of each one alone.) For comparison, I have a '99 9-5 SE V6. I'm an unmarried male, age 27, living in western New York. I have a "safe driver" rating. My six-month premium for the car is US$542.90. I get a $92.90 discount for having more than one car with the company. The anti-theft alarm is worth $6.50 off. Airbags and anti-lock brakes deduct $68.40. DRLs discount another $12.50. The bonus for having homeowner's insurance is another $71.70. This was the lowest rate I have been able to obtain. Y'know what? It's worth it... -- Rob Levandowski roblnopsamhiz.com
