I guess I dont really know exactly what "The Dreaded Transmission Repair" is, but I think I was the victim of it just last night. Getting on to the highway the tranny (5sp) on my '86 900S just gave out on me. They said it was the pilot bearing/shaft (?). One shop estimated $1400 and another $2700 for new/used trannies. I dont think I will do either and instead will use the $$$ for the downpayment on a new(er) car. Any takers on my old one? Hope I was a help. I'll see if I can get a few more answers. I didn't understand what that other guy said, as the concensus from two different mechanics seems to be that I need major work, sometime within the next 5k-10k. Your answer seems to be that the onset of problems was gradual, so you were able to id things before a disaster occurred. Essentially my mechanic said that if I drive the car in, it'll cost about $2000, but if it comes in on a truck, it's going to be worse than that. Much worse. Sounds like a lot of money, but before I bought my car, this is what everyone told me about Saabs, so it was no surprise at all. It's giving in 75k before yours probably partly because I, and previous owners, have not been adept at driving the manual in a maintenance-friendly way. jl
