Rick, Check your throttle dashpot. It is a little vacuum motor on the end of the throttle pivot. It is supposed to slow down the abrupt closure of the throttle in precisely the situations you observe. My '86 had one and sometimes the vacuum diaphram can go bad. I can also be misadjusted. A good test is to rev the engine to about 3K or so and then quickly let off the throttle. If the dashpot is working correctly the RPM's should immediately fall to about 1500 or so and then slowly return to idle. If not the dashpot is bad or misadjusted.
