Subject: Mini-Spares and Fix-a-Flat

>>2. I think Saab should have supplied a full spare since I think >>that's a safety related issue. >> >Many people don't like the temporary spares, but they're becoming more >and more common in Europe due to the weight, size and cost savings. >Punctures are quite a rare occurrence nowadays; I haven't had one for >probably 20 years in my own car, although I did have one about 7 years >ago in someone else's. I too mourn the loss of full-size spares, which are disappearing in the U.S. for the same reasons they are disappearing in Europe. I've taken to carrying a can of "Fix-a-Flat" or other brand of similar stuff to get me down the road in case of a flat. Indeed, I've got a tire on my car now that was sealed with that stuff about 2000 miles ago with no signs of a problem since. Never did have to pull the spare out. I asked a local tire guy about that stuff and he told me that as long as you drive the car around after injecting the it, you don't have to worry about the sealant all pooling on the same side of the tire, and balance shouldn't be a problem. (Though I'm not sure I'd want race in GT events with a tire sealed with the it). He said he's seen cars go to the end of the tread after that stuff repaired a small puncture or leak. Other advantages to this kind of tire sealant: 1. If you are just going to make an appointment and get to the garage or parking lot to find a tire gone flat, you'll still make it. 2. Much less time on lonely dark roads at night dealing with the problem. Talk about a safety issue! 3. People without the inclination to learn how to change a tire can still deal with flats without calling AAA. 4. A car filled with junk does not have to be unloaded on the side of a highway to change the tire. 5. A car full of screaming kids does not have to be endured quite as long while dealing with the issue. 6. You can get the car back on the road without looking like a chimney sweep. 7. You avoid having the change the tire TWICE (once to put the toy tire on, and once to replace it with a real tire). 8. An otherwise dead tire is a usable tire. Ain't technological advancement cool?
