Subject: Re: I smell gas in my 87' 9000 Turbo

I had this problem with my '92 Turbo. I noticed mostly after topping off the tank. I took it to the dealer hoping that the problem was related to the svc. bulletin which involves replacing the rubber/plastic lines that connect to the tank. No such luck. After getting the car on the lift it was clear that the tank was leaking. Loosening the tank retention straps the mech was able to peer atop the tank with a flashlight and mirror revealing a 1" stress crack on the aft topside of the tank. The dealer quoted $1000 (US) to replace the tank of which over $700 was for the tank. I said no thanks, paid the $35.00 fee for the est and got on the phone to Goldwings. They sent me a used tank w/a 1 yr warranty for $385 in 2 days. I installed it myself. Fairly easy job. Just be carefull removing the pump assy and reinstalling in the new tank......easy to "F" it up. After getting the old one out I could see that there was no puncture or rubbing.....it just cracked. BTW I sent a notice about this problem to http://www.nospam/cars/problems/recalls/recmmy1.cfm I also complained to SAAB. No record of gas tank failures. Of course my car is 8 yrs old albeit only 65K miles. Get underneath the back of the car. If you see fuel stains on the tank, more than likely it is cracked. It's plastic. I wouldn't mess around trying to seal it with anything. paul in Northern VA (usa) 92' 9K T Alvin Carter wrote in message <7v7kgn$cus$1nopsam5.atl.mindspring.net>... >Everytime I fill up my 1987 SAAB 9000 Turbo.
