White smoke would indicate that you are burning antifreeze, the fact that it happened quickly would probably indicate a major problem in the cooling system, not just a slow leak. I would have to guess a coolant line inside your engine block, probably head gasket, got destroyed making it impossible for the engine to run due to the massive amount of coolant (half water at least) inside the cylinder. It sounds like an expensive repair.
