Depends on your driving style and automotive requirements. The 8-valve is not a fast car, but it's still a 900 by all other measurements. Still fun to drive, still safe, etc... Check all of the obvious items. Have it mechanically inspected by a reputable SAAB mechanic, not just some guy at the corner. Check the power steering rack for leaks. Had to replace the steering rack on my 85. If you're inclined at all to do a clutch job yourself, the calssic 900 is the easiest clutch to change (save for snowmobiles...) - it's right up front by the rad. If you're *not* inclined to do it yourself, the job will probably run you a few hundred, and does not require pulling out the motor or transmission. How's the rust on it? How much mileage? Burning oil? How much tread on the tires? Shocks ok? AC? How about them bearings? ;) You see, you can't just get a quick answer indicating whether $800 is a good price. Give it a thorough inspection. The difference b/w the 8 and 16-valve engines is horsepower. Do you *need* more passing power? If not, this could be a great car. Don't forget, it's been collecting dust. If you're interested, go in with a few hundred short in cash to see if he budges. -chris
