Subject: Re: Help: Saab Aero/Viggens -vs- BMW 328/Audi S4

You've done your homework! If you're looking for a truely balanced euro-sport coupe the BMW 3 series (esp.M3) is really the class of the field. Sure others exell in one or more narrow facets of ownership, but the 3-series do more things BEST than any competitor. The SAAB 9-3 Viggen is about as refined as a car you could build in your garage if you had lots of time and about $100K . The engine is as spectacular as any 4 cyl. ever built but the chassis is just not up to the task of "focusing the engine potential". Example: the 9-3 is basicly a price-point vehicle. Size and cost precluded the use of the 9000's super heavy duty mid shaft on the long side of the drivetrain. This shaft is the only reason that 9000 turbo's and 9-5 turbos have so little torque steer. The Viggen got the horsepower and torque of the old 9000 Aero but no tricks to tame the torque steer. even modestly heavy acceleration requires steering correction and 3rd gear foot-to-the-floor is a real handfull. SAAB even limits power output in 1st and 2nd to make the car meet their safety standards (and save a lot of C/V joint replacements). In short; an expensive, crude hotrod with great seats. If you insist in something like that, find a 86-93 900 SPG for $5000 and invest the difference. Longitudinal engine=no torque steer!!! The 9-5 Aero is a real car. Not a backroad screamer at all but a true luxury sport/touring sedan. The 9000 Aero cornered flatter but who cares at the end of the day!! The Audi S-4 is, I'm sure, a wonderful experience. But, MAN, thats a little car for a lot of $$$!!!! A great boy-racer toy but I'll bet it gets old fast when the adrenaline and testosterone stops pumping. Besides I've driven SAABs since 1964 I cant start recomending VWs now! good luck!!
