Okay... giving my 1996 900 SEturbo the once-over today I noticed a few incongruous details that I intend to talk to the dealer about. However, I found a possible problem that I need help with. At the back of the engine, just above the alternator and behind the belt, there's a circular piece of metal. This piece of metal has a square hole raised above its surface (looks like the insert for a handle of some description), and a humped piece with a hole in it which looks like a raised bolt-hole. On the engine block itself is another hump with a hole, looking like this hump and the one on the mystery piece are supposed to be aligned with a bolt through both of them. Right now, no bolt and they're off by about 50 degrees. First, can anyone tell me what this circular thing is? Secondly, what does it do? Third, is there supposed to be a bolt where I think there's supposed to be one? With the engine running there are very serious vibrations in this part, vibrations that aren't there in the block so I'm assuming either it's amplifying the vibration of the block or it's attached to something else inside that's vibrating independently. I need to know what this is ASAP so I know if this even needs fixed, and if so how urgently. Any input greatly appreciated. If needs be, I can photograph this piece and post a link later to my website where I can put a copy of the picture for reference. I don't want to do this if I don't have to because I need to reboot to Windows (uck!) in order to download pictures from my digital camera.
