Subject: Re: 91 9000-T Tire Question

The saabnet bulletin board has been full lately about the Firestone SZ50 as the best alternative for your car (especially compared to the Dunlop, Nitto, Yokohama and the Michelin Pilot). The Firestones allegedly have great handling in dry, are excellent at resisting hydroplaning, are really quiet and go for about 40,000 miles. Last time I looked, Tire Rack was selling the SZ50 for about $110/tire, the cheapest on a per-mile basis (there are cheaper Z-rated tires, but they don't go 40k mi.). If your '91 9000t has the 3-spoke Aero rims (16x6.5), you'd have to mount a set of 205-55-16 tires to go with the SZ50, just half a notch bigger than the stock 205-50-16 tires that came on your car. The SZ50 works fine at that size, although your speedo and odo will read 3% faster. If your speedo/odo are at all slow, that works out okay. Even if they're dead on (mine are), a 3% error is pretty small -- just a 2-mph discrepancy at 70 mph. I have the Yoko A520 tires (205-50-16) on my '91 9kt now. They handle great on dry pavement and resist hydroplaning well, but I'll be lucky to get 20k mi. out of them (and I'm not super aggressive) and they're *very* noisy. I'll be mounting the SZ50 in another 3-4 months, when these Yokos are gone.
