My 88 9000T has an engine problem that my mechanic hasn't been able to fix. When I start the car, heat defaults to AUTO and the engine usually races at over 2000rpm. Because of that, I always hit ECON and then it drops to maybe 1200 to 1700. Sometimes it drops to 900 (which I suspect is normal). As I am driving, the engine is definitely going too fast. When I stop at a light, it's trying to pull away. It races all the while I'm driving, (even going up hill) thereby adding excessive wear to the brakes. About 20% of the time, it behaves normally. Usually that occurs when I leave it with the mechanic :-( so he can't tell what's going on. He did replace a part, throttle control valve, I *think* is what it was called, to see if that made a difference, and it did not. The other quirky and probably related behavior is that when it is racing and I stop at a light, if I put it in neutral, it revs pretty high, if I put it in park, it will race, but after 30 sec or so it will drop to 900. Then when I put it back in drive, the car isn't trying to take off. He tells me that on the 88, he doesn't believe that the engine "knows" what gear the transmission is in, so he's puzzled by that behavior. It is possible there are two different problems going on here, the AUTO vs. ECON and another cause of engine racing as well. Oh well. Any ideas out there?? Thanks Mike
