The ECON versus AUTO behavior I guess is because your A/C compressor isn't engaging, maybe because the A/C is out of freon. There is an A/C compressor relay that you can pull (it's accessible from the glove box after you remove the tray that holds the fuses/relays) if you don't intend to repair the A/C (or even if you do intend to, to make things reasonable until you repair it). The problem when ECON is engaged, however, is something else.
