<Snip> Alan, Did you just get this car? - just wondered as it could be a sign of crash damage. GEarchange shifting about, ie where you "find" the gears? I would suggest that you replace ALL the engine mounts. The engine gearbox assembly would have to move quite along way for the symtoms you describe to occur. If one mount is shot then the other is probably gone, as the engine could still be moving, especially under load, don't forget the front one too. One check to do if you can is to get under the car and measure the distance from the drive cup to the chassis rails on both sides, the distance should be the same. If this looks ok check the distance from the chassis rail to say the lower suspension ball joint, again this should be the same on either side. Check that the suspension isn't loose /worn/damaged as well. One thing you could try is use a trolley jack and a piece of wood under the gearbox and gently jack it up and see if the car starts to rise - suggests the mounts are ok, or the engine moves about - bad mounts. Dont try and lift the whole car this way as you will stuff the mounts. Finally, when the model changed from the old 99 to 900, with an increase in engine size and the addition of 5-speeds the length of the shafts changed. Has a shaft been changed? - it maybe a short one. Hope this helps Malc Scotland Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
