ACtually, I am pretty sure the shift up light is used to increase reported milage ratings on EPA tests. There are in fact a set of rpm's which produce the most efficeient milage. My understanding is that if there is a "shift-up" light indicator the EPA testers must shift up when prompted, ensuring best efficiency. (I think we are all aware of how quickly a turbocharged engine can suck gas if you really want it too!) my nickle is in the pot.
