I believe I may be able to solve your problem. My '89 900 had the same problem. Turned out to be the swaybar bushings sckronking whenever the front end moved far enough. My mechanic used some silicone spray on them and it went away for the winter. Came back this winter so I crawled under and did it myself. Hope this helps.
