Just the hood or the whole car? While I do not know bout the pros/cons of the different methods that you describe, I can tell you that the WHOLE car should be painted. The finish on a 9 year old car has faded and there is no way for a paint shop to match the existing color. For whatever procedure that you choose, surface preparation is the biggest factor in obtaining a quality finish. The entire surface should be slightly abraided to remove any and all gloss, wax etc. Any chips out of the surface should be sanded smooth to "feather out" the chips. These areas must then have the proper primer applied.
