William, I think you have seen one Honda too many running around with the big megaphones sticking out the rear. I have an 87 9000S 5 spd. It is the same as the 88 year. The Saab exhaust system is not really set up for a straight pipe coming out the rear. The rear muffler does not cost that much, and is not that hard to replace. I did my rear and center mufflers the first year I had my 9000. I replaced with a Starla brand from Impex Distributors, 1-800-736-3550. The rear muffler was $68.50 delivered. The turbo model will cost a little more.
