Several potential causes for the problem. The bolt that holds the rods together could have come out. Check the rubber grommet to see if that has failed due to the age. Is the shifter sloppy? If so, the problem could be that the reverse lockout was forced when starting the car up and that broke something. All of the problems are external and in the linkage, so don't go pulling the engine and tranny out again. You may have to disassemble part of the dash to get at the problem depending on how deep the broken pieces are.
