Subject: Mysterious clunk in drivetrain under load on 90 900T

I've got a curious one here that perhaps someone can help with. Turbo 16V 900, drives fine, but when you stab the throttle and load it up, there's a "clunk" from somewhere in the driveline. Had a look for a broken engine mount, just in case the torque was making it lift up and down, but all seems OK. Halfshafts gone? No juddering or funny noises, turns fine, just the single "clunk" when you jump on the throttle from a steady speed and load it up. One funny thing though: as you load and unload the engine in any particular gear, you can see the gearlever move backwards and forwards in the gate, by a fair bit... can move up to 5cm (2 inches) or so. Never hops out of gear, but put your foot down, the gear lever moves backwards. Lift your foot off, the gearlever moves forwards. I'd swear it never did this before. As far as I remember, the gear lever never "walked". I thought maybe the differential might have excess play in it somewhere, but what has me scratching my head is that walking gearlever. Surely a damaged differential or halfshaft won't result in the gearlever walking around, so I'm thinking engine mounts again, but they look intact. Anyone have any ideas on this? -- Alcohol and calculus don't mix. Never drink and derive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Plexus Technologies Pty.
