Well, you never said whether it was a four-door or a two-door. Simon may have thought it was a four-door and you were referring to the back door on the driver's side. Back to your problem - I had a similar problem, but the door would not work from the outside. The linkage between the button and the lock mechanism separated. I removed the inside door panel and re-connected the linkage. I believe someone else has already suggested inspecting all of the linkages. I am selling my Shop manuals - already have a buyer - but I can scan a few pages about the lock mechanism and send them to you, if you think it will help.
