Subject: Re: poor radio reception (AM)

The message <38D18357.4CE53B5nopsamet.au> from Gregory Kleverlaan <Gregknopsamet.au> contains these words: > I have a saab 900s 1994 model. We had the car serviced a while back and > ever since then the reception on AM radio is very bad and crackally > and most of the time no listenable. It was great before then. (i think > the radio is not grounded properly?) Although FM reception is superb. > Anybody know what I need to check on the car to rectify the problem? > Greg Listen to the radio on AM without a station tuned in and turn up the volume. With the car started and idling, if you can here a ticking noise then its most likely Ignition interference and could be the Plugs are not of the Resistive type for suppression. If the noise is a whine and changes in pitch as you rev up the engine then its the Alternator and may need suppression Capacitors fitted. Also make sure the Aerial is grounded at the base properly, remove any rust/paint from the underneath of the mounting hole as it requires a good low resistance electrical connection here. You may also be able to tune the aerial in on AM if there`s any trimmer adjustment hole. (Check handbook) This can make a big difference to the recieved signal strength, just fully extend the Aerial and tune in to a weak station around the middle of the band and adjust for maximum volume. Hope this is of some use..... -- Regards, Graham........ Ex Telecomms Enginnering Tech..... Location: UK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
