Ends up you were pretty much right on target Bob with your first comment. The end point of my saga is I went back and talked to the service manager. I was impressed with both his courtesy and knowledge. He pointed out two things on my old rotors - a lip on the outer circumference that he said would have caused new pads to squeak like crazy, and some small gouges on one of the rotor surfaces that I had missed in my own inspection. He said that the Saab rotors shouldn't be machined at all since the thinner resulting rotor would be prone to overheating and warping. And finally, he said 101K was actually a lot of mileage for a set of front rotors and they're usually replaced more often (gulp). Just wanted to pass this info along. I'm not knowledgable enough to comment on it, but I did leave feeling good about the service from the local dealer. Saabs might not be inexpensive to own, but wouldn't want to drive anything else!
