The ABS system used in the early 9000 has a pump that pressurizes brake fluid in a pressure tank for use by the master cylinder built into the ABS unit. The pump us mounted on the ABS unit but is electrically separate. The pump runs when ignition is on and the pressure in the pressure tank is below a set value (you will hear a buzzing sound that starts at ignition on and stops a couple of seconds later (perhaps up to 30 seconds when cold) at the same time as the brake fluid level goes down in the reservoir. When the pressure is too low, perhaps due to broken pump, both the ABS and BRAKE lights will illuminate and the brakes will be very hard to use. There will also not be any brake power to the rear wheels. The Saab documentation advices NOT to drive the car in this condition. If the brake fluid level in the reservoir is very high that indicates that the pump doesn't run. I used to have a '88 9000T whose ABS pump suddenly decided to burn up with exactly this result. -- Göran Larsson hoh AT approve DOT se Senior Systems Analyst
