Hi Charles, Yes, it is possible (even usual!) to separate the yoke from the inward-facing piston. This of course gives the necessary space to get the handbrake lever/finger out. How easy this is depends on how long it's been since you've done it. The parts tend to rust together slightly, so use some 5-56 (I think it's called WD-40 in the United States) on the join between the yoke and the inner piston. The brake must be detached from the wheel knuckle (via the two bolts and locking plate) so that the disk (US: rotor) does not interfere with yoke travel when getting the yoke off of the brake. Once the lever is out, you can also prise out the aluminium washer and rubber gasket, to lubricate inside. My experience (from about 4-5 brake renovation jobs I've done on my 1983 Saabs during the past 12 years) is that if you find yourself having to use a lot of force to get the yoke off of the brake cylinder assembly, you may be better served to disconnect the brake line and put the whole lot on a bench to work on it there. Once you're at that stage, it's probably best to dismantle the whole lot and fit new seals. And once you've done one brake, it's best to do the other one so that you get two fresh brakes that work well. And since you now have to bleed the air out, you might as well change your brake fluid, which means you can start looking at the rear brakes, and then . . . . Somehow I always have trouble explaining to my wife why my evenings under the car take longer than expected . . . Good luck. Hope I haven't underestimated your car skills with the above explanation ;-) Regards, Robert Gothenburg "Charles H.
