Have you enough coolant? I think there is an air bubble. If you have enough liguid, you can check the temperature of coolant by opening the cooling system's cap. Remeber be careful, the hot coolant is under pressure and you have to open it very slowly. Now put the thermometer to liquid. The accurate of the meter is not important (few grades). The reading shoud be near the opening value of the thermostat (maybe 88 Celsius grade). The problem may be also in the thermostat, if so you must renew it. When I bought my 900T/85 its temperature gauge was broken. The gauge instrument (meter coil) is cheap, but the work is quite hard. Saab retailer will sell the whole gauge and the price here in Finland was awful. This failure appears the meter went sometimes very fast to the red area and remains at there.
