Subject: Re: 900 vs 9000

Read the other replies, but one point was missed. The older 900s had the engine mounted "backward" with pulleys against the firewall and the clutch behind the radiator. The 9000s have a transverse engine, like most other FWD cars. I can't speak for the 94 and newer 900s or 9-3. For a DIYer the older 900s are "interesting" to work on with this engine layout, especially the "30" minute clutch replacement.. I have also heard that from some Saab mechanics that the older 900s were better in the snow because of this design. I can say that the 900 is a great car in the snow and ice. The other difference is the way the hood opens. The 9000 opens like a conventional car, while the 900 hood slides forward and then tilts up. This difference is something which is taken for granted by Saab owners, but someone who have never seen a Saab is usually quite surprised.
