The advantage over a turbo is that boost is available immediately at lower rews while the turbo has a slight lag. On the other hand, the turbo uses "free" thermal energy from the exhaust gasses. Compressor technology is very old, the famous Bently Blower from the 1920'ies used a compressor. Also popular in piston engined fighter planes since the reduced pressure at altitude could be overcome. Johannes
