Subject: Gear shift on 1993 900

This is a first post on this NG and I hope that somebody here can help me. I am currently considering purchasing a 1993 900 convertible (5 speed manual transmission) from a local used car dealer. The car is in excellent condition (bodywork, etc.), spent it's first 5 years in Florida, has done 93000 miles, has some Saab history and seems like a great deal at $8500 so I need to make a decision quickly. The only problem I can identify is a grating / grinding shifting quickly from 1st to 2nd which can be avoided by shifting slowly. The guy who's selling it told me about the noise before I drove it and tells me that it is not a sign that the gear box will fail. I've talked to a couple of mechanic friends of mine who have warned me of the high cost of servicing a saab transmission (the whole engine / transmission will need to come out according to them) so I am somewhat nervous. I've got a mechanic looking at the car tomorrow but he is not a saab specialist. I've tried a search on this site and on other Saab sites but can not find further information. Is this a common problem or is anyone aware of this problem, who can shed some light for me. Thanks in advance for your help, Adrian B. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!
