I am experiencing the same problem on my 900i ('88). Judging by the other posts on this topic I guess it is typical Saab problem. By the way my car has done almost 320,000 kms. The problem will indeed be due to failure of the synchro ring. Like the salesman told, shifting slowly will prevent the gearbox from grinding. Another, slightly better method is to shift from 1st to 2nd via neutral (keeping your foot on the clutch). The best method is however by doubleclutching (foot on the clutch - shift from first to neutral - foot from the clutch - foot on the clutch again - shift from neutral to second - foot from the clutch). This method allows to change gear at high revs. It takes some practice, but you learn to live with it. Even better than doubleclutching is off cource to look for a Saab without problems or have the problem fixed. As far as I know a gearbox is definitely failing if it pops out of gear when suddenly pushing down the accelerator firmly. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping.
