The clicking sound is your A/C compressor kicking on, when the electro-magnetic clutch engages. What is supposed to happen when the engine feels the extra load of the A/C compressor is too make the AIC (Automatic Idle Control), to bypass a little more air past the throttle plate to increase the idle speed. When the AIC isn't working, it doesn't compensate for the extra load on the engine when the A/C compressor kicks in, also in the winter the engine will tend to die after first starting, this will continue until the engine is warm. A SAAB mechanic would probably first set the base idle by grounding the AIC, which should cause the air passage in the AIC to close completely. If the AIC is working properly there should be a noticable drop in engine RPM when it is grounded. If he is able to set the base idle, he would then unground the AIC and check to see that the engine returned to the proper operating idle speed. Then he would turn on the A/C, thus applying a load to the engine, if the AIC is working properly, the RPM's should drop slightly, then return immediately to the operating RPM. If there is no reaction, the engine dies, stumbles or stumbles with the idle then going way up before settling down to the operating idle, the AIC is sticking. At this point he knows if the AIC is good or bad, if bad he would replace it and go through that whole procedure again. If he is unable to ground out the AIC, he might connect a known good AIC to the connector to see if it is grounding out and reacting to changes in engine load. If it does react, the unit is getting the signal from the electronic control unit (ECU), if not he would probably first check the throttle position sensor (TPS), as the AIC only works when the engine is idling and this is a condition sent to the ECU by the TPS. If the TPS is o'k, then the fault lies in the ECU wiring harness, (a fairly common problem) or the ECU. Got questions? Get answers over the phone at Keen.com.
