Subject: Re: Running on LPG

As LPG has a higher octane rating and the Saab has a knock sensor driven APC, I would think this combination would be quite nice together. I do not know how a standard LPG enriching program works (acceleration requires a richer ratio of fuel to air), but this may be the biggest hurdle to overcome. I am curious if anyone has done this. I do know that CNG can sustain 12-14:1 compression without pre-ignition when the system is properly designed. I think the octane rating of CNG is around 118 or so. I feel that LPG is in this vicinity as well. The biggest problem with LPG or CNG here in the US is range and refueling possibilities. The range is reduced as the widely available tanks can be pressurized to 3000 or 3600 psi. The volume of this container would eat up quite a bit of the trunk. Even if placed in the place of the existing tank, I think you would be hard pressed to carry the same amount of energy on board as you would with a standard petrol tank. Also, converting a 9.5:1 standard gas engine leaves quite a bit of performance of this fuel un-extracted. Kind of like running your Plymouth horizon on racing fuel! Just my musings... Please enlighten me if I am a bit misguided.
