Subject: Re: Oil Changes

After a bad situation with Jiffy Lube, I can recommend that you NEVER GO THERE if you care anything for your vehicle's well-being. I once had an 84 Celica ST that was inexpensive, had only 127000 on it, and didn't require a lot of work. It was my first car after not driving for 3 years (thanks to CA smog rules, or the CA dealers assn, eh?) and I love the way the Celica drives. Well, drove. I took it to Jiffy Lube twice, and the second time, I wasn't told that I was leaking oil even after the so-called "Signature" treatment. Five days later - I consult around LA, and that week involved a lot of travel between points, and didn't notice any oil seepage beyond what you expect from a 1984 vehicle - I was going down the freeway and heard the beginning of a chugging, clattering sound. Something told me at 65 or so to take it out of gear. The engine died, and I had enough momentum and the grace of God (and two truckers) to get across four lanes, and instead of calling AAA immediately, I called Jiffy Lube. Strangely enough they sent a guy out in one of their trucks with 3 quarts of oil, but to no avail. AAA arrived, and towed me back to Jiffy Lube. If this thing was going to die I wanted it to be on their hands. Unlike the previous session I was showed where the oil had been leaking. They filled up the oil, told me it wasn't leaking, but that I'd need a new engine. I told them we'd find out who'd pay for it. The poor Celica sputtered all the 5 blocks back home. I called Jiffy Lube corporate, and was told by an equally oily executive that IT ISN'T THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PEOPLE WHO CHANGE YOUR OIL TO DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN JUST THAT. If you've got fluid streaming out of the car, and the guy decides not to say anything about it, Jiffy Lube Corporate says that IT'S NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. I went outside to see if I could bring the poor girl in, and it completely seized on the spot. I had AAA tow it to a place where I was told that no engine could be found for it, and so had to donate it to charity and hope for some kind of a tax benefit. STAY AWAY FROM JIFFY LUBE! They're charlatans all the way to the top, and I doubt that they pay the guys who do the work enough for them to care. Stephen Goodman * The free Loop of the Week!
