Subject: Re: electrical short in '82 900?

Without the engine running, Disconnect one terminal from the battery and connect an Ammeter between the the lead and the Battery Terminal and see if there is any current being drawn. I would expect to see a few milliamps, as the internal clock is always on and maybe some power to an alarm if its fitted. If its excessive then try disconnecting the alternator as a Diode may have gone short or leaky, also the Radio and any other equipment. Another possibilty of current drain would be an internal light switch stuck on like the boot. Also with the battery connected and the engine running make sure the Voltage across the Battery is around 14volts. If its much lower i would suspect the alternator or a bad connection. -- Regards, Graham, Location: UK ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The message <8iueah$a8p$1nopsamoch.acc.Virginia.EDU> from sha3unopsaminia.edu (Scott Andrews) contains these words: > my 1982 Saab 900 is on the 9th year of a rebuilt alternator, > and i had a new voltage regulator and battery put in 3.5 years ago. > recently, the battery has died. i can recharge it, but it only > holds the charge about a week. during that week it cranks > fine, but then the battery dies after 6-7 days and it won't > turn over at all, but it will crank after jumping. > this sounds to me like a short somewhere in the electrical > system that is draining the battery over the 6-7 days, since > the battery is capable of being charged. any suggestions as to > where to look or how to track down possible short sources? > thanks for any help. please E-mail instead of posting as i > don't check this newsgroup often. > scott andrews > sha3unopsaminia.edu
