Subject: Stereo Wiring Mayhem

The Pioneer tape deck in my 85 900 didn't work when I bought the car last month, so when I came across a Saab Clarion deck in a thrift store I immediately snatched it for $10. Upon taking out the Pioneer, however, I was in for some frustations. To begin, the plugs aren't compatible; the wires for the two decks are differently colored (I think that the Clarion deck didn't appear till 87), and the Pioneer used 4 speaker wires, not two--even though there are four speakers (but two channels, I assume. The Clarion deck has 8 speaker wires.) Anyway, there are five wires on the back of the Clarion I can't figure. The black and the red are obviously power and ground, but there are grey and brown and green wires (I think) and I have know idea where to connect them. Could one be for the light display on the radio? And most vexing of all, disconnecting the power circuit sets off the alarm. Dammit, if anyone knows how install stereos well (this is my first) can you please offer some instructions. I checked the wiring diagrams in the service manual and I can't figure all those symbols and abbreviations--beyond the obvious, that is. If you're in Denver or Dallas or somewhere in between I could stop in for some personal instruction, since I'm currently in Denver and will be traveling to Dallas on Monday. Oh, by the way, the mountains I was driving through were west of Denver, up .6% grades. I actually ended up blowing the seal on my expansion tank cap and spilling tons of rad fluid overheating on those big bastards, but with a new cap all seems well. Thanks Saabster 85 900 Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
