Sounds like the fan control relay - I had the same thing happen two years ago on my '91 9000. The problems you cite are not bad at all over seven years of ownership. Keep the car in top shape! Make sure that it's the cylinder head gasket (expensive) and not the valve cover gasket (cheap) that needs replacing.
