Subject: can't get into reverse sometimes (1984 900 S)

For the past few days I have been having major problems getting my 1984 900 S into reverse. Gears 1 through 5 work perfectly, very smooth. But lately when I pull up the little collar and move the stick to the right to put it into reverse, it just stops before going all the way over. It feels like it's hitting something. I have to make 5 or 6 attempts sometimes, but it eventually goes into gear, and then works fine. I know from reading this newsgroup that reverse is problematic on the old 900s (mine has 116K miles on it), but I'm hoping this is a minor adjustment to the "pull-up collar" mechanism? btw, as a follow-up, I posted here about replacing all the brakes a few weeks ago and I got a bunch of good replies. Turns out my local mechanic said I could get by just replacing the rear calipers, rotors and pads and wait a little longer on the fronts. Total cost for the rear was $561. Damn, I wish I had the space to work on the car myself...such is life in the city. -jw
