My first thought was get a fatter and tougher arm :>). I have used small hand towels for various things like what you mentioned. One instance was as padding at the small of the back when the seat did not adjust sufficiently to support my back. Fold the towel into quarters or thirds and fasten it to the armrest with velcro.
